Cabinet Customization Ideas That Will Make You Want to Redecorate

Cabinets are a big part of every home; they can be found in bedroom closets, bathrooms, kitchens, pantries, garages, and just about every other space where storage is needed. They are quite possibly the most underrated home décor item, and we believe that a home’s cabinet facing can actually say a lot about the person who lives there. Not only can you customize the color and wood grain, but the cabinet facing itself can be updated to enhance the rest of your home’s design. If you are looking for a way to set your home apart from the others, cabinets are a great place to start.

Learn the Lingo

Cabinet doors are not one-size-fits-all. There are three primary door styles homeowners can choose from, so pick your cabinet face carefully:

Inset

Inset cabinets are flush with the face frame and feature small hinges either on the outside of the face frame or just inside of them for an “invisible” hinge look. Because the cabinet face is on the same plane as the frame, this style offers slightly less space inside the cabinet itself. This is a very traditional style most common in homes built in the early 1900s.

Partial Overlay

Many modern homes have upgraded from inset cabinets to this partial overlay style, which completely covers the cabinet opening, but only partially covers the face frame. These can be installed with or without visible hinges, and help save space on the inside of the cabinet.

Full Overlay

This very modern look is also known as Euro style. With a full overlay, the cabinet door completely overlays the box and face frame. Hinges most commonly appear inside the cabinet to help create a clean look. This option offers maximum space inside the cabinet, which is why it is a favorite among many homeowners. The sheer size of the cabinet doors themselves does make them vulnerable to wear on the corners, which is why it is so important to invest in high-quality materials like our thermally fused laminate.

Play with Color

Whether you prefer lighter tones or rich, dark wood, it’s best to choose a cabinet color that goes well with your existing home décor. Look for colors you really love that might be in your home already. If your floors are hardwood, for example, look for flecks of color in the wood grain that would lend themselves well to a complementary cabinet tone. Not everything has to match in order to create a beautiful style.

Add a Hutch

A hutch is a great way to break up the monotony of an otherwise uniform row of cabinets. A hutch is visually appealing, offers plenty of storage options, and provides countertop space for photos, cufflinks and other treasures you want to keep on display. Many hutches, like ours, are available in single or double-wide sizes.

Shelf Liners

Liners are a great way to work a fun pop of color into your home décor. We don’t recommend placing liners on the shelves themselves because the color can be hard to see on a horizontal surface. Instead, place the liner on the back wall of your cabinet. It’s like a backsplash, but for your cupboards.

Glass Inserts

Glass inserts are a great way to keep the contents of your cubpoards visible while maintaining the functionality of your space. Bonus: seeing your belongings helps encourage you to keep cupboards clean and organized at all times.

Hidden Organization

Enhance your cabinetry with pull-out, tilt-out and slide-out accessories that can help maximize the space. For home closets, we like to install slide-out belt and tie racks to help keep accessories organized. Many homeowners also enjoy pull-out cabinets for spices in the kitchen.
