Organize Your Home Office in 5 Easy Steps

Working from home is a luxury that many people enjoy in Fargo and the surrounding areas. Not only do these lucky individuals have a short commute, but they get to spend more time with their families. Keeping a home office organized is just as much, if not more, of a challenge as keeping a cubicle at an office building neat and clean. Because your space is at home, it is likely that your significant other, children and pets will, at some point, storm through and leave your office in shambles if items are not properly stored. Smart Spaces suggests these five tips for effective home office organization.

1. Have a system in place

The easiest way to keep papers from piling up around the office is to live by the “one and done” rule. As soon as you touch a piece of paper – whether it be a bill, contract, fax, etc. – take care of the item right away or move it to a permanent place. An inbox/outbox will help you accomplish this goal. You can even create a homemade inbox/outbox using old shoe boxes and wrapping paper. Keep track of all the bills, work and mail that you will be sending out in the future with a wall or desk calendar.

2. Go digital

There are countless organization apps and programs created specifically for keeping track of your appointments, schedules and daily routines. Many of these applications are free to use, though more advanced programs such as Evernote will need to be bought for a small fee. At the very least, you should set alarms for yourself and use a desktop or mobile calendar to keep track of due dates and important meetings.

3. Clean out your space

We tend to keep pens, pencils, empty boxes, used notebooks, and other items that really should be thrown out. Whether by force of habit or a lack of time, these useless items tend to accumulate on your desk, in drawers or in cabinets. Take the time to throw these items out for a fresh feel to your space. You’ll be amazed at how much clutter you can clear in just one afternoon of cleaning out your home office!

4. Clear your desk

Family pictures, hand sanitizer, chapstick, sticky notes, pens, pencils, gum and countless other items adorn the desks of many home offices. Corral pens and pencils in a pencil holder or coffee mug. Sticky notes, gum, and hand sanitizer can be kept in a drawer organizer. Keep no more than two personal items on your desk at any time, including photos.

5. Label, label and label some more

Everything should have a place to call its own in your home office organization system. Label cabinets, drawers, and boxes including the items that they contain. For example, designate a cabinet for client correspondences and a drawer for client invoices.

These are just a few of the many different, easy ways that you can organize your home office. Whatever you choose to do, make sure that your organization system is easy to use and easy to keep organized.
